Hot tub removal

Hot tub removal in Colorado Springs, without a crane

The tub has been dead for two winters, the cover is shot and it is sitting on a deck with a four-foot gate. We cut it into pieces where it stands, carry the pieces out and leave the deck and the fence the way we found them.

An old acrylic hot tub cut into sections on a backyard deck, a reciprocating saw and a wheelbarrow beside the pieces, pine trees behind the fence

A hot tub is a wonderful thing until it stops working, and then it is a 500-pound acrylic shell with a wooden skirt, a pump, a heater and twenty years of UV damage, sitting somewhere a truck cannot reach. The way to get it out is not to lift it. The crew disconnects it, pulls the skirt and the equipment, and cuts the shell into sections with a reciprocating saw, small enough to go through the side gate and onto the dolly. A typical tub is out in a couple of hours and the deck boards it sat on are untouched.

Before we arrive: the tub has to be empty and the power off. If it is hard-wired, which most are, the breaker off at the panel is usually enough; if you want the circuit removed entirely, that is an electrician's job and we will tell you so. A swim spa or a very large tub is a longer job and quoted after a look.

What goes where

The pump, heater and any copper go to metal recycling. The shell, foam insulation and skirt go to the landfill by weight. A working tub in good condition is almost impossible to re-home because moving it costs more than a used one is worth, so plan on disposal.

The space after

You get either a bare deck or a bare pad, swept. If there was a concrete pad you want gone too, that is a demolition quote on its own; see the demolition page. If the deck was built around the tub and you want the hole decked over, that is a carpenter.

What the price covers

Disconnect and dismantle

Skirt off, pump and heater out, plumbing cut, shell sectioned on the spot with the right saws and a dust sheet under it.

Carry-out

Pieces sized for the gate and the dolly. No crane, no removing fence panels, no dragging the shell across the lawn.

Disposal

Metal to recycling; shell, foam and skirt to the landfill by weight.

What stays

The deck, the pad, the fence and the gate, exactly as they were, swept.

Questions about hot tub removal

Does the tub have to be empty?

Yes, please. Drain it the day before with the drain valve or a cheap pump. Draining on the spot adds time and, in winter, makes an ice rink out of the deck.

Do I need an electrician?

Not usually. Flip the breaker off and the crew disconnects at the tub. If you want the circuit and the disconnect box removed from the house, that is electrician work and we will say so.

Will you damage the deck?

No. The shell is cut on a dust sheet with the pieces lifted, not dragged. The crew has done this on a lot of Colorado Springs decks.

Can you take it over the fence?

We don't need to. Sectioned pieces go through a standard gate. If there is no gate at all, the crew looks and quotes the route.

Is it worth selling instead?

Only if it works and the buyer is willing to move it, which costs about what a used tub is worth. A dead tub has no buyer.

Can you do it in winter?

Yes. Drained and with the ice off the deck, a winter removal is the same job. We watch the forecast on the Woodland Park side.
